Ghanaian Movie Review: Bruna

Bruna is a 2023 film that was directed by award-winning movie director Frank Fiifi Gharbin. It’s a production by Pearl Ashia.

Martina Dwamena (Asantewaa), Adjetey Anang, Kofi Adjorlolo, Naana Hayford, Awo Yaa and Nana Tornado played the lead roles in the movie.

Bruna was screened at the Nollywood Film Festival Germany 2023, which took place at the movie theater FilmForum Höchst in Frankfurt, Germany on Friday 28 July, 2023.

The film is based on a couple who hail from different tribes in Ghana of which the family of Boatemaa and the father of Zane disapproved of them getting married due to perceptions concerning the tribes.
Zane (Role played by Adjetey Anang) is from the Ewe tribe while Boatemaa (Role played by Asantewaa) is from the Ashanti tribe. The couple studied in the U.S.A. and travelled back to Ghana in order to get married. Although they experienced disapprovals, they still got married but started facing problems. Boatemaa was possessed by the spirit of a dead girl after she got married. She left Zane and went back to her mother’s house. Eventually, Boatemaa was set free from the dead spirit and she reunited with Zane.

It is a funny movie. The audience did laugh a lot while watching it.

It was my first time watching Martina acting in a movie. She is a very good actress! I commend her for her acting skills!

There are perceptions about certain tribes. As long as God approves of an intermarriage between a man and a woman who are from different tribes and they have asked Him in prayers if He approves of them marrying each other or not, they should go ahead in getting married. True love conquers everything!

Bruna was awarded by the team of Nollywood Film Festival Germany for 3 categories: Overall Best Film, Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up. Esther Bakow is the one behind make-up.
