Continuing its trend of creating a product for every conceivable niche, Samsung on Tuesday announced plans for a version of its Galaxy Tab line designed just for kids.
The colorful Galaxy Tab 3 Kids comes preloaded with various games and educational content, and with an ability for parents to set limits on what children can do, and for how long.
Amazon offers a similar option for the Kindle Fire, while Microsoft has a “Kid’s Corner” feature built into Windows Phone 8. Those options, though, are designed for parents to share their device with a child, while Samsung’s effort is clearly aimed at giving kids their own device.
LeapFrog and others also make devices specifically aimed at the youth market, while any trip to a restaurant will show that lots of iPads and iPod touches are finding their way into small hands.
Samsung’s kid-friendly tablet is set to ship first in Korea in early September, with availability in the U.S. and rest of world to follow.
It packs a seven-inch screen, front and rear cameras, and the Jelly Bean flavor of Android (4.1).
Meanwhile, Samsung confirmed that at least two new products for grown-ups are planned for introduction at the company’s Sept. 4 event in Berlin. In an interview, Samsung’s Y.H. Lee told the Korea Times that, as expected, the Galaxy Gear watch and Galaxy Note III would both be introduced at the Berlin event. Lee didn’t give details on either product, but did say that the watch will run Android and won’t feature a flexible display, though Samsung has been working on such technology.
